Melissa began her career working in a local, sub shop restaurant during the summer while she was in high school. By her second summer, the owner had already promoted Melissa to the Manager. The additional responsibilities ended up being excellent training that would serve her well throughout her career.
After high school graduation, Melissa left Florida to go to college. Melissa returned after a year to assist her family. She started working full-time in the financial industry while attending college in the evenings. Within a year, she was working at the Darden Restaurant corporate headquarters in Orlando, FL. She worked in almost every accounting department there and became the “floater” for the accounting area and filled in wherever needed. Eventually, she ended up as the Profit Sharing Coordinator in the employee benefits department, where she managed the profit-sharing plan for the corporate office and all the restaurants. This included the hourly and salaried employees which totaled several thousand participants.
After graduating from the University of Central Florida, with a B.S. in Business Administration, she went on to pursue her management skills and garner work experience in several different fields. Her positions included: Sales Associate, Store Auditor and eventually the Customer Service Manager for a large, retail department store, Property Manager and accountant for a real estate firm handling a large industrial park, Office Manager/Accountant for a commercial construction company and a licensed health/life insurance agent and employee benefit specialist for several independent insurance agencies.
In January 1998, Melissa joined D. L. Newslow & Associates. She started out part-time, handling various duties in the office, but within a year, she was handling the accounting duties full-time. Since then, Melissa has held many positions within the company. She has continued to enrich her education by taking and completing several courses within the food/beverage industry. She is a Certified Food Safety Manager (certified through ServSafe and NRFSP, recognized by ANSI). She has also received the Certified Food Safety HACCP Manager designation (through NRFSP) and is able to proctor those exams. She has attended and participated in several Food Safety Courses: HACCP Plan Development, Advanced HACCP (recognized by IHA), HACCP PRP’s, Internal Auditor, Allergens and Pathogens Management, Food Defense, FSSC 22000, Advanced Sensory Analysis and Food Safety Management Systems (FSMS). She has held membership in FL IFT, IFT, FAFP, IAFP over the years and has volunteered her time assisting at many of the conferences. Melissa is also a notary public.
Melissa’s strength lies in her aptitude to fill in various roles as needed. She is always willing to do what is necessary and is a dependable, team player. Melissa enjoys working with and sharing ideas with others. She is knowledgeable about the various regulations in our industry. This enables her to answer client’s questions when they call. She primarily works in the office, but she also assists at the public workshops. This includes scheduling the various workshops, acquiring a venue, making sure that they run smoothly and sometimes does the set-up and break-down of the workshops. She also works hard to develop alliances with other quality companies. In doing so, D. L. Newslow & Associates is able to refer clients to companies that offer services that will be beneficial to them and the clients are confident that they are dealing with a quality company. This is just another one of the value-added services that we offer our clients.
Melissa works on our company website, as well as, our social media presence. This includes starting a blog for our company to help educate others on food safety “hot topics”. She continues to strive to increase our presence in the industry, get our brand out there and work on our vision for the future. Melissa’s current position is as the Director of Business Development and we are glad to have her on our team!
